Pocket billiards though are games played on pocketed tables like pool and you will many of these billiard pool table products on this site.

Firstly lets look at some of the games played by explaining the word carom coming from the French and Spanish language. It means to hit and rebound, in billiard games this would be off other balls or cushions depending on the game. A variety of games for Billard Tables sprung up based on carom billiards here are some examples or carom games.
Balkline – Three ball game where a point was scored each time you hit both other balls with your own. This was played in a restricted space on the table which you had to stay within outlined with a balkline hence the name.
Straight Rail – This developed from balkline and was played exactly the same but using the whole table without a balkline restriction it was more interesting as a spectator sport than balkline which could be boring to watch.
Cushion Carnoms – This involved three balls again with two requiring to be hit by the other but with an added element the cushion must be struck after hitting the first ball and before it hits the second.
Three Cushion Billiards – The most difficult of three ball billiard games as between striking the other two balls on the table the struck ball must hit (carom off) three cushions. This game became and still is the most popular game in America and large parts of latin America, asia and Europe. The scoring was one point each time you successfully achieved this and the current world record is 31 jointly held by Semih Saygier and Hugo Patino. Scoring even one point per turn is regarded as extremely good and you would be regarded as a professional if you can average two this reflects the difficulty of this game. The first official three cushion billiard competition is recorded in 1878 and won by Leon Magnus from new York and it was played in St Louis.
Artistic or Fantasy billiards could also be described as a trick shot completion in which competitors each carry out the same shot with the winner the one with the highest end score. These shots can involve curving, jumping and caroming the ball in various situations including around objects set precisely on the table. The original version developed in france had 76 shots with 500 points to be played for.
The size of Billards Tables depend on what game and rules you are playing with 6foot x 12foot or 5foot x 10foot the competition size tables.
